- White was chosen with the second
group of astronauts in 1962. He was pilot of Gemini IV and during
that mission was the first American to make a spacewalk. He served
as backup command pilot for Gemini VII, and had been selected
to be command module pilot for the first Apollo flight. Tragically,
On January 27, 1967, a flash fire occurred in command module
012 during a launch pad test of the Apollo/Saturn space vehicle
being prepared for the first piloted flight, the AS-204 mission.
Three astronauts, Lt. Col. Virgil I. Grissom, a veteran of Mercury
and Gemini missions; Roger B. Chaffee, an astronaut preparing
for his first space flight; and White, died in this accident.
