Benjamin Franklin signature circa 1764

Benjamin Franklin ( 1706 - 1790). A man for all seasons, America's first polymath, Franklin was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America. Franklin was a leading author and printer, satirist, political theorist, politician, scientist, inventor, civic activist, statesman and diplomat. As a scientist he was a major figure in the Enlightenment and the history of physics for his discoveries and theories regarding electricity. He invented the lightning rod, bifocals, the Franklin stove, a carriage odometer, and a musical instrument. He formed both the first public lending library in America and first fire department in Pennsylvania. He was an early proponent of colonial unity and as a political writer and activist he, more than anyone, invented the idea of an American nation and as a diplomat during the American Revolution, he secured the French alliance that helped to make independence possible.

At one point Franklin spent time in England. Immediately after his return to the colonies he again became part of the Pennsylvania Assembly.Franklin had been formulating plans for some type of governmental structure that would bind the colonies together under one authority. At this point though Franklin believed it should be a Royal Government. Initially in the 1750's Franklin and others perceived the need for a unified government to protect the colonies against first against Indians and later against the French. By 1864 Franklin had drawn up a scheme for creating a unified 'Royal' government for the colonies but there were some who opposed this idea and Franklin's plan among whom was Dickinson and Issac Norris who was Speaker of the Pennsylvania Assembly so Norris resigned and Franklin took his place. It is clear that this cut signature was from this period.

This offering is a signature cut from a document of some sort and is signed as BFranklin, Speaker, n.p. but circa 1764. The signature is in good condition and completely legible as shown. The signature come with an image of Franklin presented below.
