Sir Thomas Picton (1758-1815). Unconventional and uncouth, Thomas
Picton was one of the best of the senior officers working with
the Duke of Wellington in the
Peninsula.
Fighting with Wellington in the Peninsular War he proved himself
time and again as commander of the 3rd "Fighting" Division.
At Fuentes de Onoro, Badajoz and Vitoria he won admiration for
his courage, if not his manners. Wellington described him as
"a rough-mouthed devil", but one in whom he had supreme
confidence. In 1813 he was knighted and promoted to lieutenant-general.
Joining Wellington again in 1815, he led the 5th Division at
Quatre Bras and was wounded during the battle. Fearing it would
mean his being replaced, Picton hid the fact he had been injured
and so lined up in battle at Waterloo two days later. It was a
fatal decision, as he was shot through the head and died while
leading his men forward.
This offering as an autograph letter signed Th Picton, Almedilla, Spain, April 13 [1811]. Four pages recto and verso with integral leaf, 8 in.x10 in.The letter has mailing folds and some minor paper loss but is in overall fine to very fine condition. The letter is quite extensive discussing progress in the Peninsula and a complete transcript is available. The letter reads in part--We have driven the French out of Portugal with the exception of Almedilla where they have a small garrison which is entirely cut off from the rest of the French Army---the battle for Portugal is almost over. Goes on to mention the rascally Spainards who have treacherously given the enemy Badajos---causing Wellington to divert forces to deal with the situation. He makes specific reference to the poor government of Portugal and mentions that Lord Wellington should be appointed Regent to straighten the situation out. Talks about the Portuguese Army in terms of how many bayonets they can bring to the fight.Fascinating content about the conduct of the Peninsular War and the people involved.Picton is scarce in any form.
