- Masaryk.
Tomas S. (1850-1937).
First President of Czechoslovakia (1918-35). a truly great man
in the history of Europe he was an advocate of independence for
his country and he was a student of American Founding Documents
the principle of which he incorporated in to his country's constitution.
He had to flee in the first World War but returned from exile
to become President and he served for 2 terms.President Wilson
helped support him after WW I. When the communists occupied his
country, they tried to eradicate all vestiges of Masaryk's influence
because he stood for democratic principles. This is a wonderful
and rare vintage photo signed as T.G. Masaryk and dated
9/Xi/20.

Edvard
Bene ( 1884 - 1948).
He was a leader of the
Czechoslovak independence movement and the second President of
Czechoslovakia. He served as President of Czechoslovakia from
1935 to 1938 and again from 1945 to 1948, his term broken by
World War II, during which he served as president-in-exile from
1940 to 1945.He was a member of the Czechoslovak National Socialist
Party (till 1925 called Czechoslovak Socialist Party) and a strong
Czechoslovakist - he did not consider Slovaks and Czechs to be
separate ethnicities.Bene became first Foreign Minister
of Czechoslovakia and in 1935 succeeded Tomá Garrigue
Masaryk to become President. In October 1938, after the Munich
Agreement ceded the predominantly German speaking Sudetenland
to Germany, but before the German occupation of the Czech speaking
remainder of Bohemia and Moravia, he resigned from office and
went into exile in Putney, London. Then in 1940 he organized
the Provisional Government-in-Exile in London with Jan rámek
as Prime Minister, and Bene himself became the President
of Czechoslovakia in exile. In 1941 Bene and his government
planned the Operation Anthropoid (the assassination
of Reinhard Heydrich) which was successfully realized in 1942.
Although oriented to the West he was also on friendly terms with
Stalin. In 1943 he signed the intent between Czechoslovakia and
the Soviet Union in order to secure Czechoslovakia's political
position, as well as his own.The so-called Bene decrees,
which, among other things, expropriated ethnic German and Hungarian
Czechoslovakians, paved the way for the eventual expulsion of
2.4 million ethnic Germans to Germany and Austria, which was
approved by the Allies at the Potsdam conference. The decrees
(still in force to this day) are disputed, but both the European
Parliament and the European Commission established that they
are not contradictory to the law of the EU.This is a 5 in. x
5 in. card signed Edvard Benes, Prague, 11.2.31 .
The writing is bold and the card is in excellent condition. A

was a major WW II leader in China. he first assumed power following
the death of Sun Yat-sen in 1928. He was supported as a major

his government to retreat to Taiwan, where he continued serving

- Menachem
Begin ( 1913 1992)
. Head of the Zionist
underground group the Irgun, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and the
first right-wing Likud Prime Minister of Israel. His legacy remains
highly controversial and divisive. Despite having established
himself as a fervent conservative ideologist, Begins first
significant achievement as Prime Minister was to negotiate the
Camp David Accords with President Sadat of Egypt, agreeing on
the full withdrawal of the Israel Defense Forces from the Sinai
Peninsula and its return to Egypt in 1978. Yet in the years to
follow, especially during his second term in office from 1981,
Begins government was to reclaim a nationalist agenda,
promoting the expansion of Jewish settlements in the Israeli-occupied
territories, and launching a limited invasion into southern Lebanon
in 1982, which quickly escalated into full-fledged war. As Israeli
military involvement in Lebanon deepened, Begin grew increasingly
depressed and reticent, losing grip on the IDFs operation
in Lebanon and the instable economy which was gradually spiralling
into hyperinflation. Mounting public pressure, exacerbated by
the death of his wife Aliza in November 1982, increased his withdrawal
from public life, until his resignation in September 1983. A

- Sir Keith J. Holyoake KG, GCMG, CH, QSO (1904-
1983).He was a New Zealand politician. He was
National Party Prime Minister from September 20, 1957 to December
12, 1957, then again from December 12, 1960 to February 7, 1972.
Five years later, he was appointed Governor-General of New Zealand
from 1977 to 1980.Holyoake became Prime Minister a short time
before the 1957 election, Sidney Holland having retired due to
ill-health. The election, however, was narrowly won by the Labour
Party. Holyoake was Leader of the Opposition for three years
before National returned to power in the 1960 election. National's
victory is often attributed to Holyoake's skillful campaigning,
particularly his attacks on Minister of Finance Arnold Nordmeyer's
so-called "Black Budget".
- Sir Keith was the third longest-serving
Prime Minister (just under 12 years) that New Zealand had ever
had (he is surpassed by Richard Seddon's 13 years as Premier/Prime
Minister and William Massey's close to 13 years as Prime Minister).
He was known for his diplomatic style and "plummy"
voice. He was also fondly (or mockingly) known as Kiwi Keith.
(a name given to him in childhood). In 1972 Holyoake resigned
as Prime Minister to ease the succession for his deputy and friend,
Jack Marshall. When National under Marshall was defeated, Holyoake
remained prominent in Opposition. He played an active part in
the 1975 election, which saw National win power again under Robert
Muldoon. Muldoon appointed Holyoake to the specially created
sinecure of Minister of State. In 1977, Holyoake was unexpectedly
appointed Governor-General. This choice was controversial, with
many opponents of Muldoon's government claiming that it was a
political appointment. His conduct while in office, however,
was acknowledged by most to be fair and balanced. His term as
Governor-General ended in 1980.Sir Keith died in December 1983,
aged 79, in Wellington.Price:$125.00

- Simeon
II of Bulgaria or Simon von Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha ( 1937). He
is a Bulgarian politician and former Monarch. As Simeon II of
Bulgaria he was the last Tsar of Bulgaria from 1943 to 1946.
As Simeon Borisov Sakskoburggotski he served as Prime Minister
of Bulgaria from 2001 until August 2005. He is sometimes known
in the English speaking world as Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, which
is an English form of his family's original German name Sachsen-Coburg
und Gotha. He is one of the last living heads of state from the
World War II era and he is also one of the few monarchs in history
who regained political power through democratic election to a
different office (see Norodom Sihanouk and Napoleon III for similar
histories).Simeon was allowed to stay on the throne with regents
appointed by the new Communist government. In September 15th,
1946 the monarchy was abolished after a referendum that claimed
95% approval. All political parties supported the abolition of
the monarchy. The royal family initially went to Alexandria,
Egypt, where Tsaritsa Giovanna's father Victor Emanuel III, ex-king
of Italy, was living in exile. In July 1951 the Spanish government
of Francisco Franco granted asylum to the exiled Bulgarian royal
family. In Madrid Simeon graduated from the Lycée Francais
and studied law and political science. In 1955, upon turning
eighteen, he proclaimed himself the Tsar of Bulgaria, in accordance
with the Tarnovo Constitution. In 195859 he enrolled at
Valley Forge Military Academy and College in the United States,
where he was known as "Cadet Rylski" and graduated
as a second lieutenant. Once again in Spain, Simeon studied law
and business administration, and went on to become a businessman. This

- Field
Marshal Jan Christian Smuts, OM, CH, (1870 1950) Smuts was a prominent South African
and Commonwealth statesman and military leader. He served as
a Boer General during the Boer War, a British General during
the First World War and was appointed Field Marshal during the
Second World War. In addition to various Cabinet appointments,
he served as Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa from
1919 to 1924 and from 1939 to 1948. From 1917 to 1919 he was
also one of five members of the British War Cabinet, helping
to create the Royal Air Force. He played a leading part in the
post war settlements at the end of both world wars, and was one
of the driving forces behind the formation of both the League
of Nations in 1919 and the United Nations in 1945. As the foremost
spokesman from the Dominions and Colonies his advice was decisive
in reshaping the British Empire into the British Commonwealth. As
Prime Minister, he opposed a majority of Afrikaners that wished
to continue and further the de facto Apartheid of the inter-war
years. After the Second World War, he established and supported
the Fagan Commission, which advocated the complete abandonment
of all segregation in South Africa. However, Smuts lost a general
election before he could implement the suggestion, and died,
just as de jure Apartheid was being implemented. One of his greatest
international accomplishments was the establishment of the League
of Nations, the idea for which is usually credited to Woodrow
Wilson, but the implementation of which was guided by Smuts.
He later urged the formation of a new international organization
for peace: the United Nations. This is a 3.5 in.x6 in. card signed
J C Smuts, Capetown, 13 Feb.1931. Card in excellent
